Toot

Written by Andy Price on 2025-01-24 at 11:30

Are there any open source tools for audio noise generation (the kind of noise some people like to fall asleep/study/work to)? I couldn't find any when I searched but it seems like the kind of thing there would be an open source project for.

(And yes I'm sure I could pipe /dev/random into my audio sink but that's not exactly configurable.)

@jcrabapple @neil Looks promising but I can't tell from the description what application the plugin is meant to be plugged into :)

@andyprice I would expect some Pure Data https://puredata.info/ having done something of the sort.

@andyprice I wanted some white noise a while back and I arrived at this one-liner which assumes you have "sox" installed:

play -n synth brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth 0 0 0 10 10 40 trapezium amod 0.1 30

brown noise is much easier on the ears than white noise, and the rest of the arguments shape it to sound like waves

@ansuz Nice, that looks like something that could be built upon to make something more user-friendly.

@andyprice yea, I spent a while playing with it to get something I liked, then stuck it into a script so I'd never have to think about it again. I only think to use it when our neighbours have a noisy party or launch firecrackers

@andyprice The play command from sox can generate white/pink/brown noise which can be used to generate such sounds:

play -n synth brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth sine amod 0.3 10

play -c2 -n synth whitenoise band -n 100 24 band -n 300 100 gain +20

@andyprice I’m not sure whether this will be helpful but can I offer you a splash of modular synth in case you find the art of crafting white noise from scratch interesting https://youtu.be/yLyeBQbOUNE

@andyprice This seems like an enjoyable little project, to take a bunch of parameters and output something like a wav file. Do you have some specific parameters in mind?

@RogerBW No file output involved, these apps just generate endless noise with a certain "shape" to resemble rain, etc. or just white noise to help them block out external sounds. No intention to use it myself, I was just curious about what's out there to recommend to others :)
