Are you not importing posts with mentioned because you don't wish to spam the users who was mentioned in the post? You could strip the first @ and replace with something.

@daj @gotosocial no, the main reason is that I think I would need to create local account entries for everyone mentioned and that would require a lot of work.
Since I am pushing all of this directly into the database I have no way to let gotosocial do all the work.
As I mentioned, this is a crude hack that would be much better implemented in gotosocial itself.
