"our commitment to an enterprise rooted in respect and inclusion is appropriate and necessary."

Diverse employees and suppliers have fostered

"creativity and innovation in the merchandise and services that we offer,"

98% of Costco shareholders agreed with the board.👍🏿

Segregationists denied.

Segregationists are going to test each and every one of you, to see where your heart is at.

If they haven't tested you already, they will test you soon.

Do you know what you are going to say?

@wilpercy @mekkaokereke Nothing to do with today's vote but Costco is a better company than a lot of folks realize. Living wages, good benefits, equity, etc are all very normal for employees; Sam's Club by comparison pays starvation wages and treats its employees like dirt.

@klausfiend @mekkaokereke I had no idea. Thanks. The freezer part of our fridge is still too small to avail ourselves of their generously sized products. Still, their heart is in the right place. Bravo!

@wilpercy @klausfiend @mekkaokereke Costco has a medium sized box freezer for sale that's about $200. It would probably pay for itself within a year (the fresh ground hamburger is $4.95/lb...)

@samhainnight @klausfiend @mekkaokereke thanks, but space is a premium for us.

@wilpercy @samhainnight @klausfiend @mekkaokereke It really is unfortunate. Costco is one of the things where you must have money to save money. I know so many people who tell me "I just don't have room!" and they don't get a membership, but instead pay $5/doz for eggs and $2/can for canned chili.

Those of us wealthy enough to have space (be it earned or birth lottery) can take advantage of this, saving literally thousands of dollars in a year, allowing us to buy more space (and things like chest freezers/garage fridges), etc. Meanwhile, those below some threshold are stuck on a treadmill.

Capitalism is REALLY broken.

(yes, obviously a costco membership is not the solution to wealth inequality... but it makes for a really accessible metaphor that just about anyone in the US can relate to.)

@mathaetaes @wilpercy @klausfiend @mekkaokereke One way around it is to share the cost & purchases with family or friends.

@samhainnight @wilpercy @klausfiend @mekkaokereke Very good point. Go in with a group, split the goods. A Costco membership usually comes with 2 cards, too, and they don't really care if the two people are related. I had my roommate on my account for years - mostly so they could pick stuff up for the house - but the store was fine with it. When I went to change over to a person I was dating, the person at the desk was extra cool about it, too. "uhm... so do you want to remove, uh, the.... other person...?" Like very clearly trying to avoid mentioning a previous partner, just in case the current partner (who was with me) might get offended and land me in hot water.

Such a good company.

@mathaetaes @wilpercy @samhainnight @mekkaokereke It's the Paradox of Vimes' Boots.

So much of the modern capital economy works like that, and there's definitely a critical mass you need to get to to escape that trap.

@klausfiend @wilpercy @mekkaokereke oh yeah. Everyone knows that if you're looking for a good job that's not necessarily a vocation, Costco is the best place to go. Which is why it's so hard to get hired there
