As Windows 10 gets closer to no longer being supported, you may want to consider switching to Fedora to keep your computer running with regular security updates. Here's an easy guide on how to do that for yourself or someone else!

@fedora It's not an easy guide I would actually recommend, though

@mkljczk @fedora Today Windows is not an easy operating system and the PC Gaming through Windows is becoming into an absurdly complex platform thanks to NVIDIA and Epic Games.

@edlinks @mkljczk @fedora but this is not the main users of the 260 millions w10 abandonned PCS

We need linux to be as easy to install as VLC on windows

@freechelmi @edlinks @fedora And Fedora is easy to install (Anaconda is not that bad imo) but the guide is not so user-friendly. Telling Windows users that you can do the same thing both in GUI and in terminal and then having a few paragraphs about commands they won't ever have to use will scare them away.

@trashblaster @fedora no it won't-- have you seen the lengths people go just to make windows 11 work on unsupported hardware?

@fedora the main problem for Windows users is to boot on a USB key , but we have a new solution coming to avoid the need of USB key and boot linux installer directly from the hard drive

@freechelmi @fedora Most #Windows users never consider installing any operating system. If something doesn't work anymore and cannot be fixed, they buy a new computer.

2025 is the perfect time for them to move on to something more exciting

@fedora and with Atomic desktops like Silverblue, Fedora is the best choice for inexperienced users.

@lig @fedora i will suggest more inclusive commands in the installer intro (like codecs) yeah i know abt rpmfusion but we're talk about windows users, i believe something like that will encourage them.

Also since fedora ships btrfs as default filesystem a better snapper configuration with scrub/balance and all things correlated (like opsuse) should be work out of the box.

This is my small opinion if i made some mistakes please be gentle and also english is not my first language :)

@sub @lig @fedora This exactly. Not having codecs in an easy to install way at first boot or install time will kill Fedora as a beginner distro. Then again, I wouldn't recommend beginners use Fedora directly because it's more of a test bed for technologies. For example, the GNOME and KDE Workstation Editions don't have XOrg sessions by default, which may be an accessibility problem. (1/2)

@sub @lig @fedora I'd recommend Linux Mint, Tuxedo OS, or the image-based Fedora-based @UniversalBlue (like Bazzite) over Fedora proper for beginners for these reasons. And probably POP!_OS once the new version with COSMIC finally releases. Unfortunately, it's hard to recommend point release distros right now, especially with new hardware. (2/2)

@cameronbosch @lig @fedora @UniversalBlue i totally agree with you, there are a lot of points that fedora but also other rolling distro (avoiding arch world) should improve for a better experience out of the box no matter if will be for a basic or an advaced user (1/2)

@cameronbosch @lig @fedora @UniversalBlue on newer hardware having a rolling release is such a must right now (kernel but also performance with wayland and DE) but the rolling distros aren't too much for beginners...

i found tuxedo a lil bit too meh for me (i dont know why since a lot of ppl suggest it) also linux mint right now is x11 only (the wayland session sucks) so like i said its hard...

maybe ubuntu non lts but i really hate the snap thing so for me this will not an option

@fedora No offense to the writer of this article, but there also needs to be a single SSD partitioning guide, given a lot of laptops only have a single SSD slot.
