@jdmcg @zebratale Maybe you weren't born in that era? It's how things were then. I miss it a lot.

@BigD @zebratale oh, I was around, and recognised so much of it. Definitely awful.

Some horribly misogynist jokes and behaviour that has not aged well and is less funny and more horrific than I remember.

Toot

@jdmcg @BigD I haven't watched it in years but my recollection is that it's a bit of a snapshot of the time. Kiwi movies have always had a dark stream running through them right up until Taika starting bringing something lighter maybe.

Descendants

@zebratale @BigD I am completely in agreement that it is a snapshot of the time, and it has its moments. But I didn't really gel with the casual sexual harrasment and assault, binge-drinking, blokey culture in the 70s and 80s that I grew up with, and it feels even more sketchy viewing it in 2025.

@jdmcg @BigD as a white male of a certain age I may have fonder memories of the time. I also find I have to try to recalibrate things that looking back were clearly pretty awful, my own behaviour notwithstanding. Probably why we have the likes of Ground Swell and Act party supporters - people struggling to accommodate changes eroding their beliefs of the way things are supposed to be. And of course Act not trying to reset the clock but appealing to voters who would like that to happen.

@zebratale @BigD I think part of what made it difficult to watch for me was recognising my childhood in it, while sitting next to my teenage daughter who was aghast - and that made me see it through fresh eyes perhaps.
