The starting point for my reflections is the fact that the #history of #emdiplomacy is still highly Eurocentric. I argue that one reason for this persisting Eurocentrism among others is the impact of implicit and underlying narratives of #emdiplomacy that are carried on unconciously. My paper illustrates this using the example of #earlyModern #peace #diplomacy.

  1. Since the #MiddleAges #peace and justice were regarded as core virtues of any ruler. The interconnection between peace and sovereignty can be traced back to Roman Emperor Augustus. But first #Augustine transferred this conception of peace into the framework of Christianity. Thomas Aquinas built on this when he related peace to the common good and declared maintaining this peace to be a ruler's task.

Desiderius #Erasmus restricted #peace to Christianity. Christian peace together with other ideologies shaped the foundation of #earlyModern European rulers' identities as members of a princely and peaceful community. Maintaining peace was perceived as a means to enhance a ruler's prestige and reputation by presenting him as a prince of peace - even this a term that emphasises the connection between peace and Christianity.

This interconnection is also reflected in the terminology of #earlyModern #peace treaties which are the result of #emdiplomacy. These texts refer openly to the Christian framework of peace by declaring to conclude a pax christiana.

With the rise of #emdiplomacy, maintaining, restoring and securing peace became a core task of #emdiplomats.

  1. #NewDiplomaticHistory studies #emdiplomacy from a cultural history perspective by focusing on actors, practices and spaces. However, it ignores its own underlying concepts of #emdiplomacy. #emdiplomacy is described as characterised by the courtly environments of the princely society. At the same time, the #WestphalianPeaceCongress is regarded to mark a watershed in the development of #emdiplomacy and to be style-setting for #emdiplomacy.

Thus, views and research on #emdiplomacy is shaped by contradicting narratives. Moreover, such a conception is restricted to the European Christian world. It does not leave space for other forms or actors of #emdiplomacy. Finally, it neglects contacts with and developments in the non-European world.

Thereby, #emdiplomacy becomes provinicialized and Eurocentric.
