Toot

Written by stib on 2025-01-23 at 06:14

Not me browsing the Fediverse from a command line client on my Arch machine like some sort of goddamn walking cliche.

It's actually really good, I'm unironically enjoying it more than the web version.

Feel like a bit of a cheat for setting it up so it can display images. Image-free Mastodon was probably better for my mental health, but it will stop me having to open media in an external viewer.

Is it just that I'm noticing it, or is TUI (Terminal/Text user interface) having a bit of a moment? I hadn't even heard the term TUI until a couple of weeks ago (apart from the bird from Aotearoa).

@stib Thanks for sharing this! It took me less than a minute to install and login, now I'm replying from the command line :D

@stib Impressions after giving it a spin: it works nicely and is easy to get the hang of.

Unexpectedly, I missed seeing people's profile pics - especially from unfamiliar names.

@KatS If you are using Kitty or similar you can enable images. This feels kinda wrong, but it does let you see pfps, and media right in the terminal. You have to install the right package, on my machine I used pipx to install it: pipx install "toot[images]" and I start it in kitty with toot tui -f kitty

@stib Interesting; I never got into Kitty, despite its appropriate name, but I might just give it another try for this.

@KatS #Kitty quickly became my favourite terminal emulator. Easy to configure and very configurable, enough good features, not too many silly ones.

Yazi works well in kitty too, it's a TUI file browser, and you can set it up with media previews.
