A thing I’ve discovered while doing lots of talking with old friends on this holiday is that many people are completely unaware of the huge energy/environmental footprint of AI. Those of us who know need to raise awareness of this wherever possible!

@simplicitarian that’s so true - I don’t think our uni understands it, which really makes me mad as we claim to be on a pathway to sustainability, but are still pushing the erroneous idea that AI is wonderful. Where is our critical thinking??

It's a worldwide affliction where clever people who don't know much about these things have been persuaded to view the world through AI-enhanced goggles.
In the UK, Starmer has promised that "Britain will be one of the great AI superpowers" and is committing billions.
Here at home, Judith Collins has gone googly-eyed over AI potentially replacing civil servants en masse.
One day the AI bubble will burst and we'll be left with a pile of "data centres".

@BobLefridge @drwalters Agree completely. I’m sure there are some really good and worthwhile uses of AI, but many of the things being done with it currently are just frivolous and/or dodgy 😬

Companies like OpenAI are valued in tens of billions, yet they've never made a profit. They're giving away their product at less than cost.
The true cost of producing AI slop is farcical for the plagiarised drivel it regurgitates.
