A thing I’ve discovered while doing lots of talking with old friends on this holiday is that many people are completely unaware of the huge energy/environmental footprint of AI. Those of us who know need to raise awareness of this wherever possible!

We have a 40 minute break in Oamaru, which is full of grand old buildings like this. I went for a quick walk, found the Victorian part of town closed for filming. Obviously some sort of period drama!

Got all the essentials with me - book, phone, noise-cancelling headphones, flask of tea, snacks … it’s a long journey. Lucky to have a window seat!

Thanks for the good wishes everyone! I’m now on my next bus - the Intercity to Ōtautahi.

Good thing - it’s very cheap.

Sad thing - it’s not a train, there aren’t any on this route 😢

My holiday begins! Waiting at my local bus stop (Otago Peninsula) for the bus into town. This is a #NoFly #SlowTravel trip with many stages. Adding a hashtag so you can mute if not interested in my wanderings 😆

Tomorrow I go away for more than 2 or 3 days for the first time in over 5 years! I got out my suitcase, thought it seemed heavy, and discovered a second suitcase I can’t recall at all inside it. None of my family claim it so it must be mine I guess! As a bonus I found a pair of socks inside the smaller suitcase 😆

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet

But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat

Someone posting the other lemon tree song reminded me of this one! Based on an older Brazilian song and covered by many different people (I especially remember The Seekers). Here’s a reggae version 🎶

The corn is as high as a elephant’s eye

And it looks like it’s climbing clear up to the sky 🌽

They called it a wasteland

A wilderness gone wrong

Where the twisted trees have fallen

The branches stripped and bare …

Each of my submissions was just a few sentences long, since that is all I had energy for, but I made it pretty clear what I thought.

Thanks again to so many Aotearoa friends here for publicising and encouraging submissions on all these evil schemes. 💪🏼

I did the last-minute homework thing again and made a submission on the Oranga Tamariki Amendment Bill, the boot camps one (closes tonight).

While I was at it, I submitted on 3 other things -

Social Security Amendment Bill (sanctions and more re-applications for beneficiaries, closes tomorrow)

Regulatory Standards Bill (truly evil, closes 13th Jan)

Puberty blockers consultation (closes 20th Jan)

Emily Writes guide was very helpful.

Gotta love the way that the Aotearoa corner of fedi is dominated by discussion about making submissions opposing multiple awful bills going through the legislative process, just when many people are on their summer break 🫤

Anyway, wishing everyone strength at this troubled time 💪🏼

Did my last-minute homework - a submission on the Treaty Principles Bill. It was only a few sentences because I’m low in energy, but hopefully every submission counts!

Thank you friends here for the encouragement. I will try and do 1 submission per day until I’m done with expressing my views on all these abhorrent schemes 😬

Shopping for pillows today and it brings home why there is so much plastic in our world. All the polyester pillows very cheap, all those that aren’t are expensive.

Also notable is the blatant greenwashing efforts - pillows made with recycled plastic bottles, ‘natural’ pillows made with polyester mixed with wool, or with lavender added. They’re still mostly plastic 🫤

I wonder if this - the effects on tourism and $$$ - will be the thing that finally gets some business people and politicians of the right acting seriously on climate change 🤔

Of course tourism is itself a major contributor to emissions … though that doesn’t get a mention in this particular story.

Further down the list, Melissa Vining receives a well-deserved award for getting Invercargill’s Southern Charity Hospital established. If our government funded the public health system adequately that hospital would not be needed 😡

Several top recipients of NY honours receive them for involvement in charities/philanthropy.

It’s great when people use their time or talents or wealth to help others (though there’s a saying that philanthropy exists to launder the reputations of the rich).

BUT there is something wrong when people depend on charity for the very basics of life. It’s appalling that so many children need a charity for food! We can do better than this.

I’ve nearly finished my current knitting project and thinking about the next. I really enjoyed making this one and the fit is great, so thought I’d check the designer’s other patterns. There are several I really like - seems I might end up with another animal jersey 😆

She is a German designer who goes by Maschenwunder on Ravelry, in case anyone else is interested in these!
