‘Nine Winter-y Words to Warm the Cockles’

from BBC Radio 4

“Now here's a word to love on a frosty morning: “apricity” is a now obsolete word that means “the warmth of the sun in winter”. E.G.: “The apricity of today's sun feels like a warm blanket.” It was in 1623 that lexicographer Henry Cockeram recorded (or invented) the word in his book The English Dictionarie: Or, An Interpreter Of Hard English Words. It never stuck. Perhaps it's about time we brought it back.”

@ChaHarper Today in much of the eastern US, we experienced full 'januaritudinousness'. (Here in Ohio, the morning low was around -20C.)

@michaelmeckler That’s a new word to me…I can’t find it anywhere. It is your own invention? I find it difficult to say: did you consider ‘januaritudinal’?

Although I guess ‘januaritudinalness’ is just as challenging. Thanks anyway for your inventiveness. It’s always a good thing.

@ChaHarper 'Januaritudinousness' is a neologism whose first attestation, as far as I was able to investigate, is in a Mastodon social media thread from early 2025. (Indeed, it is this very social media thread.) 😉
