@fancysandwiches DO NOT BUY THE DR40X!! It has zero shielding, and you will end up with phone interference. If you want to handhold the recorder, consider a used Sony PCM-D100 if you can find one, or an H5/H6. The Zoom essential series does give you 32bit float which can be nice. If you can spare the cash, get a used Sound Devices MixPre, but of course then you're using external mics. Best sound, very flexible routing, and it's a mixer.

@SteveDuncan awesome thanks for all the info 👍. The Sony PCM-D100 certainly looks ideal, but I can't find a used model in my budget. Anything that requires external mics is also kind of a deal breaker, at least for now.
