I'm reading yet another queer YA anthology, and all the characters in it are supposed to be 16-17.

And they... are not. They talk like hyperverbal self aware adults thinking back on their struggles. And most of these stories are set in modern times.

I'm asking you to actually talk to your audience.

Queer kids have a lot of problems, and anxiety, but they're just not experiencing quite the same struggles we had when we were 16 fully 20 plus years ago

They have the internet! And they know what queerness is! And they swear a lot stronger than "omg"

Plus, no kid is picking up a book or anthology with queerness on the cover by accident.

I get that YA isn't always written for the kids it's written about.

But if you're writing pretentious asshole 17yo kids for adults, you're...

I think that a lot of times, authors write, or want to write, young adult characters that were actually young adults (young 20s), but then they shop around and can't find a publisher for it. So they think only YA sells, and age down the characters, as though saying someone is 17 makes it believable.

And sure. Here I am, an Elder Millennial reading YA to my Elder Millennial Lover(tm).

But I have seven children

Most of whom are teenagers. Most of whom are queer.

And I read for my enjoyment and also to vibe check for them.

And a lot of stories just don't make it.
