Today's project is another example of why "lines of code" is a terrible metric for developer productivity.

I just spent 8-10 hours of time reading, evaluating, thinking out alternatives, and looking up stuff.

The code I wrote is about 6 lines long and is deadly simple looking.

@MichaelTBacon Some people have jobs where they solve problems. Others, unfortunately, are paid to code. If problems have been solved or not doesn't count. They even may create new problems by doing their job. This will help to sell the services of people who's job it is to coordinate even more LOC producers.

@MichaelTBacon also if you’re measuring loc, one of the best applications of llms is β€œmake this do the same thing but longer”

@MichaelTBacon thinking about LLM based code dev, this metric should be actually reversed.

@MichaelTBacon

My team finally convinced management to drop kloc as a measure by inserting a bunch of "no-op" instructions and tripling our "productivity" one day.

In 1985.

(One of our managers was a bit useless; we called him No-op Smith.)

@MichaelTBacon Some of my best code is also some of my shortest. I aim for efficiency, but not at the cost of making it unreadable.

One of my best investments so far has been a 32x9 display. I find it better than turning a screen to portrait mode - it’s easier to increase the font size and still see complete lines.
