Hey new fedi people: Mastodon isn't like those other apps. It's like going for a walk in the woods. First, start with being quiet. Take note of the plant witch in the moss covered hut. Click follow. Observe the gentle troll sleeping in a pile of leaves. Click follow. Say hello to the owl peering down at you from the oak tree. Click follow. Keep following until your feed is a calm forest stream flowing past lichen covered stones. Now you have reached the meadow. Take a nap. #fedimigration

I find Mastodon reminds me of RSS or podcast feeds.
Without subscriptions you see very little and the app might show you things you may or may not be interested in. There's no filter bubble, the app does not know you or your interests.
Start subscribing to what you want to see and it will fit perfectly into your life.
