Hey if I managed to lure anyone here from Bsky, welcome! Here's some tips to make Fedi better:

Federation is cool and awesome, but also janky. Because of how it works, you won't see all the comments under a toot. But there's a browser addon that will fetch them for you called Substitoot!

When you're writing a post, there's two buttons under the post box that probably say "Public" and "English". The first one is the visibility of your post; the second is the language you're posting in. You can change both of these defaults in Preferences > Other.

If you decide you want to try a different server, you can easily redirect your profile to the new one you're moving to! That's under Preferences > Account > Account settings, then scroll down to "Move to a different account". It won't move any of your posts, likes, or favorites, but it will transfer who you're following and who is following you. It will also leave a banner on top of your old profile linking to your new one.

If you see somebody posting a reaction to something you can't see, with just a link to another fedi post, that's a quote-boost like Twitter and Bsky have. It's not a default Mastodon feature, but some other Fediverse sites and some third-party apps support it. It took me forever to figure this out. (I'm too lazy to use anything but the web app.)

Toot

If you edit a toot, everyone who liked or boosted it will be notified. This is to prevent, you know, the kind of misuse you might expect could come from being able to edit posts that can be liked or boosted. Use this power responsibly.
