One big flaw of Mastodon is how bad it is at showing threaded replies to a toot. So well-meaning folks may reply with the same information over and over because they don't see that you and/or others have already discussed it in replies. #UX

Toot

For the love of mike, PLEASE design Mastodon to be better at showing threading and replies.

I keep getting nailed with the same question I've already answered in the replies.

I don't blame the people replying, I blame the interface.

But as I have a disability that affects my hands, having to do repetitive answers is not harm-free for me! #Accessibility #a11y #Mastodon #UX

@meganL Heck yes for pointing out that the information available impacts the behavior of those replying. Like, the current setup gives you the least context possible until you click into a post and once you get into the post it doesn't really group anything and it lights my brain on fire

@cederbs It is definitely holding back what Mastodon could be and sometimes fomenting conflict because folks (sometimes me) assume the person is being "lazy" instead of assuming that something is missing in the user interface.

I feel a bit bad critiquing this as I cannot program and am too broke to donate to efforts, but I do hope there are folks who care about it.

@meganL I assume the folks care (At least, I hope they do). In my opinion, critique of systems we use (especially when providing the reasoning) is so important because it provides evidence supporting work to be done.

@cederbs @meganL This might be more of an issue of federation? If people don't click on the original post, they might not see all replies. 😳 Which is also one of the issues on the Fedi.

@Radgryd @cederbs It's an additional issue, but probably a somewhat minor one. Even replies from the same instance don't show up until someone clicks on the toot. And there's nothing intrinsic to indicate that they should click on the toot to expand and see replies.. So most don't click.

@meganL @cederbs Mhmm, this seems like you'd want more options to display content. 🤔 I wouldn't want to see replies from my own instances to the post, really only if I follow the people. But I'm also really used to clicking on the post when it's interesting because I want to see the replies.
