“Galton defined eugenics as ‘the study of agencies under social control that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations either physically or mentally.’ Galton claimed that health and disease, as well as social and intellectual characteristics, were based upon heredity and the concept of race.”

So #DOGE is #eugenics then?

@maggiejk Interestingly, we don’t know what genes might help later. I listened to a podcast discussing how a certain gene made someone more likely to survive the plague but now makes that person more likely to have gastric issues (like IBS, lactose intolerance etc).

@DarkMatterZine interesting, I don’t have IBS but I get abdominal migraines that are the most painful thing that has ever happened to me. It’s so bad that my neighbors hear me crying and moaning and screaming and they get worried about it.

It’s so bad that if I was to get Covid that would make it worse I would rather that it just take me. I don’t want to survive a plague if I’m going to end up in more pain than I already have that I can’t get much help for because sometimes other people I don’t even know abuse pain medicine.

I don’t want to survive the plague if I’m going to end up sicker than I am. It wouldn’t be considered survival at that point.

@maggiejk Hugs. I don’t know if that gene variation still helps survival, it was a video about how hundreds of years ago x gene helped against the plague and ‘SURPRISE’ has side effects now.

My intended point was that what is currently a “strength” could later turn into a vulnerability.

And, like with pedigree dogs, breeding for certain characteristics is likely to backfire.

@DarkMatterZine thank you for your kind words, and that does sound extremely interesting. And almost vaguely familiar, I’m going to go look into this because it’s fascinating.

I started clicking around this morning after reading a piece by Jessica wildfire that was talking about how in the 1920s someone proposed a bill in New York to prohibit people who wear glasses from getting married and producing defective children.

The US has always been a shit hole for anyone who isn’t perfect I guess.

@maggiejk If you want excellent research on the subject that includes USA involvement in eugenics read Cultural Locations of Disability by Snyder and Mitchell. I knew a bit before I started reading their books but they blew my mind.
