One of the scariest things I did as a child was to slide the button to retract a fully extended 25 foot metal tape measure as I held it in my hands. It was a furious razor snake running straight for my delicate fingers.

@Chrishallbeck Reminds me of being oh, about three or four years old and picking up a hose with a garden sprayer on the end, not knowing what it was.
I pointed it right in my face and pressed the handle. Got the fright of my life, because it sprayed water in my face!
I was silent through the whole thing, because I was too scared to scream.
Oh, and this was in a grocery store, in the produce section. Seems like stores have automated misters now, instead of those hoses.
