Apparently there's about 4000 castles in the UK, and 3000 knights, so only 3/4 of a knight per castle. Very disappointing.
With a King and a Queen that gives our back rank a strength of about 30,000 points. The second rank must be worth about 60,000,000, though.

@cjwatson 500 per castle! That's going to make things complicated. 😄

@chiffchaff @cjwatson a mere handful of bishops though

@pseudomonas @cjwatson There's about 140 bishops, as far as I can tell.
This is how the whole thought process began in my head, on reading about the existence of the bishops of Fulham, Ebbsfleet, Stepney, Stratford, Islington, and, ffs, Willesden.
"Good Lord", I thought, in a very ungodlike manner, "Are there also bishops of Balham, Ilford, and Shooter's Hill? Is the Church of England like the pre-Pepys navy, with more than one admiral per ships? How many bishops are there?"
And on it went. 😄

@chiffchaff @cjwatson I'm not sure whether suffragan bishops are valid for chess purposes.

@pseudomonas @cjwatson What about flying bishops? Maybe they would be too powerful, jumping like knights?
