This is very disturbing. I didn’t believe the reports until I saw the salute video. Importantly, neo-N*azi groups are celebrating the gesture. So they saw what my eyes saw too.

Musk will argue he was doing a Roman military salute. But context matters. He recently issued public support for the neo-nazi AfD party in Germany. His grandparents were members of the Nazi party in Canada according to Errol Musk. He had to or should have known how this would look to the world.

@jaykuo He's also old enough to remember Apartheid. https://www.ft.com/content/cfbfa1e8-d8f8-42b9-b74c-dae6cc6185a0 I think we should highlight that chapter in his life, in the context of the salute. Of course I haven't read the article. It's behind a paywall.

@jaykuo Not to forget the numerous ideological links between the Third Reich and Rome. (The "first" reich here is the Heiliges Römisches Reich or Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation.) To say nothing of fascism -- the word fascism itself goes back to the Roman Republic.

A Roman military salute would not make this much better.
