@royscholten two of them have been holding rock concerts outside my kitchen and bedroom window for a few days. That's the best description I have of the energy they put into it, two birds sound like 20.

@royscholten Have you done a Californian quail? I heard and saw one on my pergola a few weeks ago. The head feather looks completely disconnected from the head yet miraculously stays in place. Could be quite an interesting impression to capture in print.

@libroraptor very distinctive indeed! I've mostly focused on species local to the Netherlands so far. There's over 10.000 species, so I feel I gotta have a theme to make coherent series.

@royscholten I won't try to talk you into a New Zealand native, the tuī, in that case – capturing the coloration has challenged many an artist for centuries. Despite how common they are, a punchy, high-contrast cartoon version dominates how many people think they look. The hard white parson-collar neck tufts are really more like a fluffy cravatte, and there's a rich brown patch on the back, for instance.
And they are aggressive despite a reputation for posing sedately on flax flower stalks.

@royscholten Most birds here are pretty drab by European standards. They tend to have nice songs, though. In Australia it's the opposite with bright garb and metallic screeches.
There's also a tiny population of tiny owls in the forest behind our house but I've never seen one. We hear them at night. It's called ruru or morepork, if you want to look it up.
