My American friends on facebook have started noticing they are following the accounts of Trump, among others, without having chosen to do so.

They're seething in violation. But also wondering whether it's actually the predecessors' official accounts being handed over to the new incumbents, and hence rebranded.

Took a big risk last week – got frustrated with a philosophy of science book draught, left comments dissecting it and telling the author how to fix some of the holes, overcoming his assumptions, and tightening his constraints. After I sent it away, I thought, maybe I was too blunt... after all, I don't know any philosopher post-Aristotle, and this is stuff is 20th, 21st century. But today I got an e-mail back thanking me for helping out so rigorously.

Aristotle's clearly the one to thank!

Yay! London student I've been editing for has passed PhD exam with only the lightest revisions to be made – just "improve the English" in a chapter that I didn't edit. This one has been nice to edit for: I could see as her writing progressed that she was learning from my edits and commentary.

It is unfortunate that supervisors rarely have time to do this for their students. Mine did, but that is now almost unheard of in the 2020s. In effect, the supervision is being partially outsourced.

My toaster has been taking ever longer to toast. What's likely to be wrong?

The "color" control appears to be a timer rather than affecting either element temperature or monitoring for browning.

So I'm thinking that the elements are running cool.

I asked the manufacturer (the brand is Russell Hobbs) whether there were internal trimpots to tweak but they have no service documentation because it's "quite an old model, we had it for nine year."

I have a clothes drying rack, the frame made from painted steel tube. The paint's turning into dust. I think it's called "chalking". How should I fix that?

One thought is to sand it all down and repaint. But I'm wondering whether I can just paint over it and let the new paint consolidate and bind the old.
