I keep thinking about this video about the house that survived the fire because it was designed for passive solar/kept the embers out...

I love the passive solar and totally want it in my dream house, but I keep thinking how that person whose house survived when the neighborhood burnt down... like now they live in a toxic ash heap 😢

It's symbolic — you can make your efforts, but if your neighbors don't and your community doesn't, then it only goes so far & even if you survive, you're left amongst the wreckage.

I don't think these efforts are wasted cuz it has to start somewhere but it emphasizes how we're in this together.

If you can do the thing if you have the gumption & means, then you need to do it cuz not everyone can. The psychic toll of going against the grain is bigger for some, according to your quirks.

I'm very quirky: I (sometimes) can do the thing, will do it, try to stop me from doing it,etc.

But the net effect remains: we need to lead the way (when we can) but also work on building resilient communities.

That means resilient communities at all scales, but not at all times: right now I see everyone scaling down to focus on the smallest units of community. Their family, their friends, strengthening connections where common purpose is strongest. This is incredibly powerful and important.

We see the lone house standing among the wreckage. We don't see the human connections being forged in evacuation: that's the true resilience.

"Community" is much bigger than a physical space. "Rebuilding" the house may (or may not) be good but "(re)building community" is what everyone needs.
