I have for years now been trying to limit my exposure to US electoral politics, particularly on social media. There was a brief point in my life where John Oliver, and Stephen Colbert, and the NYT and the Guardian regularly came across my feeds and I would engage, but now my political philosophy is well formed. I know I am never supporting a Republican; I will research relevant candidates in local races and primaries, but I know what I stand for and I do not need the annihilation that American politics has devolved into to be delivered directly over the air into my eyeballs at the speed of light.
Knowing horrible things about horrible people will not make my vote magically count more, nor will it help me better support my friends who are also struggling to get through these dark times.
All I can do is be the best person I can be. And have some faith, however naive, that if we stick to our values, and to our commitment to each other that we can still build a better future.
