The self-aggrandizing hypocrisy of censors sometimes amazes me.

I just read this long thread about how TikTok, being under control of the Chinese government, has been used as a tool to influence elections specifically blaming TikTok for Romanian outcomes.

Read between the lines, however, and you'll see what's at work: pure sneering ego. "TikTok fooled the masses, but NOT ME! I'm too smart to be fooled by this, but the weak-minded masses must be protected!"

It's repulsive.

It reminds me of when the fundie Christian types were up on television sets pounding their pulpits about pornography. It's undermining the morals of society, pornography is, and they know because they watched it as part of their censorship!

If pornography is such a drain on morals, though ... why should I trust the person who watched it to determine that it was a drain on morals? Why because THEY aren't fooled by pornography, naturally! They're immune! Only the weak-minded are impacted.

@ahelwer You'd think the classic essay would be Orwell's thing about the middle and upper classes constantly using the lower classes as weapons. 🤣
