[#]FPQuestion of the day:
Do you let coworkers, friends, or strangers use your pens? What would you do if someone tried to use one or “borrow” one without your permission?

@penfount thankfully I’m not in an office environment where people can just pick up my stuff. I let pen friends try any pen. If they are not fountain pen users, I give them an intro if they’re interested, or if not, I have gels and ballpoints at the ready in a pen cup.

@penfount Yes*. I don't let people use my main pens, but I do carry a couple Pilot Varsitys around with me that I use to penable/teach people. Once they know good pen etiquette, then I may let them borrow one of my more expensive pens (ie, not $3).
I'm very territorial about my pens. If it's not a Varsity, NO TOUCHY! I tell them that the pens are special and they need to ask first as they risk damaging the pens. I do leave Varsitys out at my desk as decoys while my good pens stay on my person.

@penfount husband is allow free reign as long as he puts it back.
Co-workers must ask and be watched carefully.
A few times they have randomly grabbed one of mine, they get confused and put it back down. There's been other times where i found them struggling to pull the cap off.

@penfount nobody's asked yet, but I would probably be reluctant just because I tend to be anxious about keeping my stuff nice. If my partner wanted to use one, I would be OK with letting them do it, but again they haven't asked.
It seems very unlikely for somebody to try to borrow one without my permission since I keep them in a pouch when I leave the house with them, but I would definitely tell the person no and exchange it for one of the gel pens I carry.

@penfount I ask them first if they've got any practice with fountain pens.

@penfount I let people try them under my supervision but no more than that. I would loan one to my dad, but he has nicer #fountainpens than I do.

@penfount I really prefer not to, but feel I have to if they’re interested… Not that many people are interested. “Oh yeah, you wear tweed and brogues. Of course you use an effing fountain pen”.

@penfount The discussion in this thread reminds me of the time I gave my ten year old a Kakuno that she brought to school and she let a friend use it. They must have dropped it, because the nib was bent all out of shape and the feed was broken. After that she wrote up a list of guidelines for anyone who was going to borrow a pen from her.

@penfount Yes, I would borrow a pen. But using it without permission is like with everything: it’s not ok.
