New pen day: Laban Antique II in rose gold, medium nib. Leans to the fine side a little, I think. 1939 rose gold filled watch for comparison. #fountainpen

what do people like in touchpads for #linux desktops? i've been using a peripad-504 for about about a year and a half, and it's started behaving oddly; when the Ubuntu desktop has been up for a period of time (mostly after a week or so, but sometimes same day as reboot) i need reboot, because the cursor gets really jittery and difficult to use. updating drivers did not alter its behavior, so i'm assuming some sort of hardware issue. #touchpad

i see GDPR training courses offered in Saint-pierre and Miquelon, so presumably the answer is yes, GDPR compliance will be required there. i'm glad that we have chosen to emphasize privacy in our app, should be a lot less work to do there.

and another: is the French of Saint-pierre and Miquelon more similar to the French of Quebec, or the French of Paris? and is Saint-pierre and Miquelon subject to the GDPR or not (i don't think we have major GDPR issues but we will need to do a legal review of our app to have some certainty.)

got one more: local search is an important component of Salesium.

at a minimum, need to add country to the advanced search page and re examine the issues of setting a default location given the various approaches visitors may take to privacy settings.

4/

C) like locale, the country code field will need to be exposed in settings and registration.

D) hopefully stripe (our payment provider) will help us with tax handling. the docs suggest it might.

3/

B) Canadian postal addresses (mostly differ on the postal code). we use a set of zip code centroids from US FHA data when we just have a zip code, and geocode.earth for full US street addresses. i can buy canadian post data on canadian postal code centroids, but i can also query geocode.earth for this data. this may not be that hard.

2/ my current task is simply itemizing things i need to deal with to make spanning the border ourselves viable.

A) French language support (more probably support for the dialect spoken in Quebec). i have a locale field in the DB, but there is a need to extract all messages and prompts and create a parallel set of them in the alternate language. additionally the locale field needs to be brought out to user settings and needs to be settable on user registration

1/ #Internationalization effects on software development (hopefully an instructive thread)...

Salesium (my startup) is in upstate NY, launching from Albany. we are growing slowly and carefully (media buys in major metro areas are expensive.) but we are also close to the Canadian border, and are partnering with the Central NY Rotary District, so there is potential to "slop" over, particularly because adjacent Rotary Districts do span the international border.

Current #fountainpen adventure: replacing the seal on my ensso bolt. It looked easy on the video. Currently picking pieces of seal out of the tip. Good tweezers and a handheld digital #microscope seem essential. It is possible to fool yourself that it’s cleaned out when it’s not. Also, patience.

7/7 of these battleships North Carolina was preserved, in Wilmington. Two of the South Dakotas were preserved, Massachusetts (Fall River MA) and Alabama (Mobile AL). The following class of battleships, the Iowas, were a different story.

6/ Battleship gunfire actions were rare in the Pacific. US battleships only participated in two. BBs were being eclipsed by carriers, and mostly served as floating AA batteries (you can fit a lot of AA guns on a battleship) and for shore bombardment. US naval officers quickly became obsessed with AA and spent the entire war figuring out how to cram more and more on everything that floated.

5/ the North Carolinas were immediately followed by the 4 BBs of the South Dakota class. they reduced the length of the ship to afford a more compact armored citadel, thus balancing the design.

4/ Washington, in particular, was noted for the accuracy of her gunnery (Admiral Lee, who used Washington as his flagship, was a noted marksman and wouldn't have it any other way.) the story of Washington (and Lee's) encounter with Krishima at Guadalcanal is told here: https://www.usni.org/magazines/naval-history-magazine/2011/january/washington-wins-draw

3/ thus, the design of the North Carolina class was limited to 35,000 tons and 14" guns. however, actions by various treaty signatories triggered a clause that permitted the North Carolinas to be built with 16" guns, leading to an "imbalanced" design; this is to day that the North Carolinas were not armored against guns of the size they carried. two North Carolinas were built (the other being Washington) and they served well through out the war.

2/ North Carolina was the first Treaty Battleship built by the US. the Washington Naval Treaties had imposed limits on naval units built by the signatories (the major naval powers) including a battleship "holiday". the holiday ended in the mid 1930s at which point new BBs were constructed. these BBs, though, were constrained by the treaties (the Washington Treaty and the subsequent London Treaties) in both displacement and size of the main battery.

a conversation with my dad yesterday about certain #fountainpen inks led me to do a little online research about the problem of corrosion. unsurprisingly it's a bit more complex than just "don't use this ink" or "don't use that ink". this is probably not the last word, but i found the linked article more helpful than most. http://www.richardspens.com/ref/care/inks.htm
