Ancestors

We walked Alonso home through the forest just before sunset.

I love this part of the forest. It's one of the reasons we moved here. The old mill stream gives a sense of history to the place, and the waterfall drowns out all sounds of modern life. Even in the countryside there are always sounds of cars and tractors, but here is peace.

We said goodbye to Alonso and watched him trot up to his house.

And so endeth another day with Alonso...

He'd definitely gone home, so we headed back through the forest. A few minutes later a crunching of leaves behind alerted us to his approach.

He stopped for a pat, then went ahead back towards our house. Having walked Alonso all the way home, he then walked us all the way home, stopping often to check we were following, but trotting well ahead.

He sat on our doorstep until we got there, and whined to be let in.

We texted his owner, lit the fire, and sat on the couch, with Alonso snoring gently on my lap until his owner arrived.

He is such a strange little dog.

The border between our forest and Chez Alonso is this waterfall.

Alonso arrived as we were eating lunch, demonstrating he is Free as in Freedom.

Alonso would now like to talk to you about Free as in Free Sausages.

Walked Alonso home at sunset and he actually stayed there this time. There were people and another dog there to hold his attention. We still kept expecting him to come running up at any moment.

Got some code done before and (amazingly) while Alonso was here. Giving him an office chair was a mistake though. He just uses it as a springboard to get onto my lap.

I'm absolutely knackered. I'd quite like to just sit in front of the fire with a small dog now, but we're just his fancy bit on the side.

We were pondering when Alonso might arrive when a bark at the door answered the question.

He's now asleep on his blanket under my desk while I poke at some qemu VMs.

He did try sleeping standing up on his office chair, but that didn't work well. He stands there with his head down, eyes closed, swaying more and more until he nearly falls off the chair, then wakes up suddenly and does it again. After at least 5 minutes of this he finally got down into his blanket.

Despite having room to curl up on the chair, and having a blanket on the floor, he still dozes off standing up. 💤

One of the advantages of using a key-driven tiling window manager is that it is possible to continue working when a small dog falls asleep on you such that you cannot reach your mouse. 🖱️

I realise this isn't everyone's use-case, but it is mine. 🐶 💤

Walked Alonso home along the road this time, explaining to some folks along the route who Alonso had stopped to greet that no, he's not ours, we're just taking him home.

Arrived at the house. No one there except Alonso's companion, a long haired red setter of some sort. She stopped barking just long enough to accept pats, then continued barking.

"WOOF WOOF! Go away! You must not be here! Woof! Oh, ok, yes, pats are nice, just there, that's nice. Woof! Go away! Woof!" No sign of the owners.

The two dogs don't appear to be very close. We left them behind, and scrabbled up past the waterfall into the forest. The red setter followed, barking until we were past the waterfall, then returned home.

We got a little way down the forest path before Alonso crunched up behind. sigh

At least we returned home with only one dog, so shall we call that success?

Texted owner. He's curled up by my feet, and I have coffee, so time for more qemu.

I am exhausted.

Actually, the red dog was more likely a red golden retriever.

All right, all right. I'm working, I promise. Not looking at dog sites. I just don't want to mislead Alonso's readers.

Apparently the red dog is called Tatine and she never leaves the property, despite there being no fences. Apparently they hoped she would persuade Alonso to stay put. That... hasn't worked.

We were outside when a man in hi-vis clothing walked up with Alonso behind him. Apparently he'd found him wandering on the Departmental road.

Yes, that's normal. No, he's not ours, but leave him here and we'll let the owners know.

Alonso is quite street-smart, so I don't think he'll get run over. He walks at the side and waits for traffic to pass before crossing. Unfortunately drivers that see him won't know that, so it's not ideal to have him wandering on the road.

Animals on the road here is to be expected. Dogs, cattle, deer, wild boar.

One night we were driving home in the dark and an apparition of a horse appeared right in the middle of the road, galloping towards us. I slammed on the brakes, and it veered off down a side track. We got out and could find no sign of it - vanished as quickly as it appeared.
