A lot of the demonisation of "mainstream" social media is just misogyny.

That's an unexpected opinion to me. Perhaps I don't understand what you mean?
It felt to me that a lot of that demonisation had to do with the hatred and bullying on those platforms.

@goerp Open source and federated doesn’t mean no hate.
Women and gender minorities get a lot of hate and harassment here. The reply guys on Mastodon have been worse in my experience.
FLOSS communities have been resisting codes of conduct despite horrific abuse at conferences and in code reviews.
STEM supremacy runs deep.
Now pay attention to how FLOSSbros talk about social media. Do they call the users frivolous, silly, lazy, superficial? There’s a reason for that.

I totally agree with your first statement!
I haven't had the experiences you describe, but ofc. that's personal.
I did notice that my personal experience here was less pleasant than on Twitter, but it is improving and I can add to it by trying to be nicer and less impulsive. (And managing my own timeline)
I'd like to hope that everyone could have a safe and pleasant environment, but that's probably not going to happen.
The freedom for one is the restriction for another.
