Today I pushed a fairly major update to our journey planner which ensures a wider variety of journeys to select from when multiple operators or routes are available.
In this example searching Hamburg - Rome, we now include (among many variations) journeys via both Switzerland and Austria, even when one of them is otherwise ”technically better”. Because you might prefer one or the other for personal reasons.
I’m really excited to launch this project soon and getting some real use feedback!

@stefanlindbohm Loving the concept of "breaks" btw.
My biggest issue with traditional journey planners (Google Maps, Interrail's app, SBB, etc.) for multi-day trips is that they only optimize for total time, leading to ridiculous plans with 3 changes in the middle of the night, or a "connection" waiting from 1am to 5am at a station (if not kicked out by security).
Having an understanding that night should be spent in a night train or hotel would be a great step forward! #CrossBorderRail

@cycling_on_rails Thanks!
We actually have this very concept as technical level criteria in our journey planner, so we produce a set of results that avoid any kind of inconvenience during night time. Level one is night trains (with couchettes/sleepers) over any other train, and level two is avoiding any travel at all. Result is that we get breaks in the journey for overnight stays.
For example something like attached screenshots for Copenhagen - Milan 😊. This is all from the same search btw.

@yannseznec We haven’t started sending invites from the list yet (will soon!), but you can use this (time limited) link to get through as a special Mastodon secret :)
