Toot

Written by eclectech on 2025-01-20 at 10:07

Unless I have some magical insight that no other commentator is mentioning (very unlikely) I'm not going to be posting about US politics.

It's not that I don't care, worry, or regularly burst into a fiery rage over it, but nothing to be gained by posting any of that, so this is it.

I hope we come out the other side better, stronger, more united, and that they fail so publicly they have to dig a big hole and hide themselves away again.

@eclectech they'll get through it. There was a lot of nervousness last time around too but, thankfully, the tangerine just gets bored and sits on his arse watching TV most of the time.

I'm sure this time the UK and other allies have prepared loads of fake defence plans and missile codes for him to play with knowing where they went last time.

But like giving a toddler keys to a toy car instead of a real one

@Chrisgodwin @Chrisgodwin I really hope so. There seems to be a lot of potential for infighting leading to inaction too.

@eclectech indeed, now to do something I share with the incumbent, forget all about it and bury my head in TV so I can live in ignorance for the next few years!

I have entire seasons of science fiction shows to binge watch again instead!

@eclectech That's exactly how I feel about it. I've muted all the hashtags and now I'm adding loads of words for that exact reason.

@fkamiah17 Yep. And I know the mutes will come and go based on my frame of mind and what's going on, but I'm also determined not to get sucked in to making the same comments everyone is (quite justifiably) making. It was a definite weakness of mine in the past and it's exhausting.

@eclectech Exactly. The main thing I've learned to appreciate since I stopped mainlining news is that I have very little that's new or interesting to say about it that hasn't been said more eloquently and knowledgeably elsewhere, so all I've done is kept it at the front of my brain. Like you, I understand people's need to go AARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH a lot but I just don't get anything out of it any more.

I need silly scribbles and knitted ducks.

@fkamiah17 Yep. I think it used to be feasible to follow political news quite actively and it not overwhelming, but there is SO MUCH around these days... oh to experience boring politics again.

I just need the weather to improve now to get out with the camera. I am in a cloud today (literally).

@eclectech I've recommended it a couple of times before on here but it really brightens my Mondays, and I often end up relistening to old episodes because they make me laugh so hard. Of course you need to be podcast person and a Frankie Boyle person but still - Here Comes The Guillotine. I've got it on right now and I'm crying πŸ‘

@fkamiah17 Oooh. That one has passed me by, but definitely going to check it out.

Have been watching Shrinking recently which I think was one of your recommendations and have been very much enjoying it (although my hunch is it's a different vibe to the above πŸ˜†)

@eclectech Hehehe yeah, I did kinda bang on about Shrinking to anyone who would listen (and to a few people who wouldn't) πŸ˜‚

It's really worth it though. Glad you're enjoying it.

Your hunch would be correct πŸ˜‰

@eclectech It just got turbocharged in 2016 and never slowed down again.

It's nice and mild here today - I've been out in the garden! Saw the shoots of the snowdrops starting to materialise πŸ₯³

Hope you can get out with the camera soon, lovely 😊

@eclectech As someone who posts frequently about politics. I say, good! That’s why I always put hashtags on my political posts: people who don’t want to see that stuff should be able to block it.

@superflippy Yep, there's a good framework here to be able to say "not today". I know I'll dip in and out of reading it based on mood and what's happening, but important to step away sometimes and personally I need to trust that people who know me know when I disapprove of something without me having to say it, because that can become exhausting!

@eclectech I just came to a similar thought.

Current events have me all but targeted.

Oh it's so compelling to just let it all out on here, however..

-There's frankly quite few out here taking any real action other than re-sharing articles. I had hoped to see more pro-active organizing and resistance, but it's not here.

@BlurryBitsPhoto Hopefully once there's more than just talk, there will be some more pro-active organising. One of the issues seems to be so much talk compared to action.
