Tomorrow is undoubtedly going to be the first day of a very long shitshow, but I am not going to let that orange bastard steal my joy.

I probably won't be posting about political stuff very much, here or anywhere. That doesn't mean I won't be thinking about it, or doing what I can to help support people and groups that need it.

Because I learned from the last go-round that spending most of my time outraged does nothing good for me and it doesn't actually help anyone else, either. They want us so wound up that we can't function, and I won't let them do that to me (this time).

I'm gonna keep making my art. I'm gonna keep working on my projects. I'm gonna keep sending money to organizations that are doing the kind of work I can't do myself. Am I worried? Of course I am. But I'm not going to let that worry consume me (again).

@emery Yes. No doubt I will sometimes post about things and I will sometimes probably slip and say things that should have a CW but won't. But I will not do what I did in the last go around and stress myself into physical illness and poor mental function.

That doesn't mean in the unposted parts of my life I won't be at least as active as I was the last time. Probably more so, because where I am is a bit less of an insulated bubble than where I was. But I've already found a lot of my people here, and I will stand with them and up for them as necessary.

We're all going to get through this together, and the first step to doing it means taking care of ourselves so we can take care of each other.

@emery the partner and I were discussing this very thing this morning on the way to the MLK memorial march. These malevolent buffoons want us riled up and reactionary. They will push through outrageous bullshit to shock us. We don't have to take the bait. We can still care, we can still work towards justice and equality, but we don't have to become reactionary in turn.

Finding joy and community is vital for our own mental health and our communities.

I'm in the same boat, I likely won't boost or post a lot of explicitly political stuff but that in no way means I'm complacent or in agreement. I'm grateful to be in this social media space as opposed to others where the constant outrage is turned up to 11 at all times.

@heathen Even if we disregard the overamplified outrage, I think part of the problem with social media in general is the push to be performative. Everyone's gotta make a statement, everyone's gotta make it clear where they stand - all the time, about everything. Culturally, we've come to expect that if someone isn't talking about a topic, they're unaware or don't care.

What a world we have built for ourselves :/

@emery I've been guilty of that mindset myself, but I'm working on a lot of the ways I think about and deal with things, internally and externally. I'm glad this social media space doesn't encourage/reward that kind of behavior. Or at least not the parts I frequent!

@heathen I agree with your entire post :) The deliberate lack of an algorithm that pushes outrage is a delight. I hope more people see the need for it!
