On a train and the conductor sounds as awake as I feel 😴 having had to wake up far too early to catch the 7 am train (because the 8 am connection I originally had was cancelled).

On the plus side: if the connection works out, I'll be home early enough to still have an evening to unpack.

The part between Ulm and Stuttgart is usually one of my favourites - beautiful landscape. Today it's gray soup.

Boarded the train to the Netherlands in Cologne main stations, got lunch (I do have a standard lunch I always buy at this train station 😅) and new reading material (the last of these books they seemed to have left? Huh...). I would usually also get my last loaf of German bread here, alas it's Sunday, so the bakery does not have bread I would find interesting 🙄

Descendants

Got home with a slight delay (train problems around Schiphol, so had to take a 15 min later train from Utrecht) and inspecting whether my plants survived (they did and somehow decided to flower. In winter. Wtf, succulents, what are you doing?) 😅

@vicgrinberg

If it helps any, we've noticed flowers on several of the cholla plants in the "wash" (which is part of the natural drainage system) behind our house here in Southern AZ, USA.

If I understand correctly, several different plants bloom at this time of year as it is typically our "rainy season".

Perhaps your succulents have similar life patterns?

@SaguaroLynx dunno, one of them is an aloe and it should be blooming in late spring (and it usually does that), definitely not in the middle of winter, unwatered (a friend only came over once in six weeks to give the plants some water) with the whole house temperature very much down and the little sunlight you get in Dutch winter. Plants are weird 😂

@vicgrinberg We've had one succulent send out a stealth flower, the first time in several years. What the heck?

@mattkenworthy what happened in Leiden while I was away? Did you have 6 weeks of spring? 😱

@rieder @mattkenworthy that's also what Buienradar kept telling me but I think the succulents think it lied. It was clearly spring here.

@vicgrinberg Once I left an orchid in a small apartment, windows closed, for 4 moths, alone, unwatered, in Zurich, over Winter. Upon my return it was in flower. The little plant that could.
