In the Netherlands, there was an uproar that SIDN, the .nl domain registry, would move certain services to #AWS. As that circulated the parliament intervened and a detailed research was done.
From my read, no EU cloud provider, neither #OVH, nor #IONOS or #HETZNER or #STACKIT is able or can compete.
Nevertheless, why do not all european based domain registries join forces?

@goetz When the technical requirements are written such that they require features only provided by $vendor, then any detailed assessment will conclude that $vendor is the best option and that other services cannot compete.
Governments everywhere have long used this technique for tendering. It's how corruption can exist in the face of a "fair" tendering process.
For SIDN to conclude that there is no hosting in the EU that can meet their requirements says that their requirements are wrong.

@dentangle @goetz In what seems like several lifetimes ago I was a purchasing officer for a government research organisation.
It was frequently the case that we would ignore the recommendation to "single source" some requirement and go to open tender. Often we would get offers for something better and also cheaper.

@goetz I admire that they publish their train of thought. It should be read by all European providers that are wondering why everyone is moving to AWS/Azure/Google. However, when gaps are identified, it should also be possible to do a market consultation explicitly demanding autonomy. It is not entirely clear to me what gaps there are still. Full automation? Often that also means vender lock-in.
