Recording how it happened, in case someone is curious later. Around 2230 ET (my time zone) I was browsing #TikTok. I noticed a video I was watching had likes and responses, but when I liked it I got an error. And when I tried to pull up responses the window had an error message that it couldn't retrieve them and maybe I was having network trouble. There was a retry button. In retrospect I wish I got a screenshot of those.

I closed the app and re-opened to this message. A video came up in the background, but it didn't play. I closed the app and re-opened, and a different video came up. This screenshot is from the second one.

It's about twenty minutes later as I'm posting this. Now when I open the app the popup is still there, but there's no video, just a retry icon and a short error message that gets instantly covered by the popup.

The "Learn more" button opens a my default browser (not the one integrated into the app) at https://www.tiktok.com/us-landing .

The screenshot mentions logging in to download your data, but I don't see a way to do that.

On interesting thing I noted is that the messages weren't translated. I have my TikTok app and OS (Android) set to Italian, as evident in the app links at the top of the first screenshot. The popup message was in English.

I'm not sure there's anything deeply meaningful in that, but it's a data point that I thought might be interesting.

I'm pretty sure I have apps set to not automatically update on my phone. I don't remember when I last updated, but my phone settings say I'm on version 33.3.4.

I opened Google Play Store to check the current version, but I couldn't. When I search for tiktok in the Play Store, it shows the app icon, but only with a message that the app is unavailable. It's not clickable, and there's no obvious way to open its details page.

When I close the app and try to connect through a VPN (Mullvad) in another country (Sweden) I get the same message.

When I close the app, clear cached data in Android app settings, and again try to log in through the VPN with my username and password, I get a regular login screen, but the app refuses my login.

I set cleared cache again, set my VPN location to Italy (to match my language), and tried creating a new account. Before entering phone number or email, the app asks for my birth date. I put in a false one. The app failed to create an account, not citing any helpful error reason.
