On a slightly different note, I have to admit I've been using Reddit more than ever in the past few months. I didn't want to, but some communities are only there, and very strongly so (in my case, running and Power Metal stuff). Fediverse alternatives like Lemmy are not even close.
When the main goal of a social network is debate/discussion/news, more so than self-expression, the network effect of the established leaders is much stronger.

@zeh I quit reddit cold turkey when the third party app I used (Joey for Reddit) stopped working completely. Now I only visit if a web search points to them for tech answers which is becoming rarer and rarer.
I can't help thinking that, just like twitter and facebook, it'll become just another nazi bar.

@afreytes I think it helps that each community has its own flavor. I haven't had to deal with Nazis at all.
I did quit it when my client (Sync) stopped working. But funny enough I mostly used it for reading some stuff back then, from about a dozen communities.
I slowly went next in, now I'm actuallyparticipating in a low number of niche communities, and it feels fine, including the official app. Hard to give up.
Annoying, non-dismissable ads are the main problem, but it's liveable.

@zeh more power to you, I can't abide it.

@zeh unfortunately the main goal of a social network nowadays is to keep your attention as long as possible to show you more ads by algorithmically pushing stuff in your feed you never subscribed to. that being said i also fell in the reddit rabbit hole. for someone who is not into „personal brand building“ online its nice to just connect to other people around a topic of interest / hobby.
