I am mostly thinking about freeways here:

Imagine if all cars were required to broadcast (short range) their weight and speed, so electric and/or self driving cars could adjust their following distance in mass.

I wouldn't mind if the drivers/owners in the extremes of the upper and lower quartiles were also automatically sent tickets, to the registered owners. That includes rental cars; cars driven by spouses, kids, friends; commercial cars and trucks.

For non self driving cars, a display on the dash that shows following distance and it is red if it is shorter than the minimum recommended.

If cars are going to be this 'smart' they should do useful things.

Just do the $5 upgrade for the distance sensors, curb sensors, speed regulation, etc. because they're good for humanity.
