If irresistible is the opposite of resistible...

Then WHY does irregardless mean the same thing as regardless?

@breadandcircuses irregardless is a neologism only formalized within the last few years, It arose from a mistaken blending of "irrespective" and "regardless," which are roughly synonymous. The resulting "irregardless" isn't from the same history where "irr" negates the word, as in "irreplaceable," so it only sounds like it should.

FWIW, I have never been a fan of "irregardless," since it was a mistake to begin with...
