Given that the US is generally more libertarian and more suspicious of their own executive branch than most other western countries, I'm a bit surprised that the reaction to the impending TikTok geoblock isn't just: "Well, my VPN is running anyways, might as well set it to France now."
Also that they'd rather download yet another Chinese app rather than just a VPN app.

Thinking about it, it would've been pretty funny if Americans would've just opened up "French" backup accounts with a VPN. It could've been great code, too.
"If anything happens to this account, here is where you can find me in France."
"I also went to France, just to be safe."
"Okay, the Supreme Court upheld the ban. So we're going to France tomorrow!"
"Well, it really happened. Bonjour and welcome to France, people!"

@Sven From my understanding, the data for US accounts is housed on US shores int he Oracle cloud and a VPN doesn't help if they shut down those servers.

@Sqlgene Might be true for existing accounts that have already been linked to a country, but if I created a new account with an IP from England, I can't think of anything that would prevent me from doing so. 😄

@Sven That's my understanding as well. Probably a nightmare if you wanted to retain any following or re-upload any videos, I would imagine.
Occams razor says that installing an explicitly communist app and learning Mandarin is a much funnier FU to the government.

@Sqlgene @Sven What's this "learning" you speak of and why do you assume we do it?

@JTO_is_Typing They're referring to the fact that many downloaded Rednote, which – as far as I know – is an app by the Chinese government with, so far, mainly Mandarin content.
The bit where Americans are "learning Mandarin" now (to participate in the app) is, by my reading, primarily a joke.
Feel free to correct me, @Sqlgene 😄

@Sven @JTO_is_Typing correct. The UI is in Mandarin. Some people just use Google translate. Some people are jokingly learning it on Duolingo.

@Sven @Sqlgene I hadn't heard about Rednote.
But, I'd still say we aren't learning.
