Toot

Written by Amalia Zeichnerin on 2025-01-17 at 21:11

Was reminded of this image again today:

"I don't wear 🏳️‍🌈 [queer pride] items to tell you who's in my bed. I wear them so the family across the street knows they are safe. So the couple in the restaurant know they aren't alone. So the boy who sees me notice him looking at dresses knows I won't judge. I wear because you make them hide."

Ever since seeing this, I have been wearing progressive pride buttons on each of my jackets and coats (and a cap).

@Gustodon

Exactly the reason why I got a rainbow shoelace tied to my backpack. My shopping bag is also in rainbow colors. I've got my backpack always with me so I show it every day. The rainbow shopping bag (with a dancing Snoopy on it) is a good way to get ppl to smile that have been scared of me (big, heavy, always dressed in black with a lot of Black Metal Merch) instantly. I just have to take it out of my backpack to see smiling instead of scared faces and I love it!

@amalia12 same reason why our whole street put up pride flags one year. A new guy moved in, and was asking in the pub if it was safe to put up a pride flag on pride month, as in previous places someone had broken his window. My bf suggested we all put them up so he wouldn’t feel alone, and in the end the whole street put them up. Not everyone does it every year now, but the point was made ❤️ This was in the Netherlands.

If you are looking for shops in Germany,

you can find several buttons on Etsy or here on trans*fabel, a shop I can very much recommend.

Inter*Progressive Pride Button:

and one that is a bit larger:

Corollary: If you wear the rainbow, you are required to actually act if you see some of those people in trouble or the bigots causing the trouble. If you wear it as a moral support, but don't stand up to the bigots, you might as well not wear it at all.

Seen too many people in rainbow gear duck their head and turn away, to take those fine words seriously.

@CrypticMirror

I am queer, chronically ill and disabled.

No offence, but I am not telling allies what to do and not to do. I mean the following: It's mostly best to consider one's own safety. My own situation is this: If I get threatened, I cannot run away, because of my disability.

@CrypticMirror

And here is a sad example from Germany.

During one of the pride events, some queer people were bullied by bigots. A trans man tried to help them, got seriously beaten and died soon afterwards.

That's why I think it is best to consider your own safety first and then see what you can do or not.
