Toot

Written by Marcus Arzivenko on 2025-01-17 at 13:09

Hello everyone! After canceling all my accounts on Meta and X here I am. I'm still learning how to use Mastodon but I'm getting a great first impression.

This is my third instance, I've been posting on mastodon.art. Is it ok to boost from one instance to another? Or is it a bit weird? I didn't want to have to post twice...

@arzivenko hey welcome! Think about this as email:

you can have an email address on gmail and I can have my address on yahoo, we both can email each other.

Same here as long as the servers are federated.

We are federated with .art, so you can follow people from here to there and vice versa.

Now it's your choice in which community you want to be, but at the end of the day anyone can follow you and see your posts.

@arzivenko now, one difference with the email analogy (or something extra) is that here on the Fediverse once you choose your server you can see all the posts from people inside the server on the local timeline, even if you don't follow them. They are communities that share an interest (or maybe not, but it is in our case).

Also, each server has its own set of rules that you might agree or not with, and moderation.

Hope this helps!

@mauro Hi, Mauro! Thanks for the explanation. I liked the email analogy. I was wondering about one thing. If I post on .art it won't appear in the .mograph feed, right? It would only appear in the general feed, from what I understand. I don't intend to be a crazy spammer, but I would like to stay on both servers, since both are of interest to me.

@arzivenko you can be on as many servers as you wish.

Each local feed is exclusive to the server, but since we are federated, you will end up also in the federated timeline, so if you post the same thing simultaneously on both servers, it will be a bit odd.

I'd say just choose one server to post some type of things and another one for other stuff, that's what usually people do here.

No need to have double "mirrored" accounts, that's for sure.
