The #Meshtastic Experience

Background: I have two nodes, which can't see any other nodes besides each other. So, for some actual connections I connected one to an internet gateway (MQTT) so it is receiving messages on a local (Ohio) channel.
Meshtastic is an interesting technology for experimentation, but it helps to have a specific use case in mind. Most communication is basically "hello? is this thing on?"

@coreysnipes at @lhc, our local hackerspace in Brazil, people are very interested in this topic and trying to create nodes all over the city, but I agree with you that I didn't see anyone with a better use case than sending "hello" messages to each other.

@coreysnipes I mean most of my meshtastic communication in the LongFast channel is testing chatter and hellos. Maybe some discussion on tech. But I send DMs to the folks I know personally, and you're not going to see those.
Maybe you're in a quiet place without many nodes, or most people are keeping their convos private?
I agree it's important to have a use case in mind, or else approach it as a fun hobby, but plenty of us are having conversations that aren't just "testing".

@coreysnipes That's funny! Just yesterday I stumbled upon #meshtastic and immediately ordered a TTGO LoRa 32. π

@PistonPin Hah! I really like the idea of it. It was fun to fiddle around with. I think it would be more interesting if I could get some real range on it. It was helpful to have two units when I was getting started, also.

@coreysnipes Im really curious, if I have some nodes around me, and if so, how many. π
An idea, that immediately came to my mind, was to build a small "beacon", that would send or respond with my GPS coordinates when I'm out running on some sketchy trails. That could be pretty cool!

@PistonPin I bought a pair of Heltek V3 with cases, similar to https://www.amazon.com/MakerFocus-Development-Integrated-Meshtastic-Intelligent/dp/B0CWNX7NXG?th=1 Plus a couple of larger antennae. I haven't done any range testing on them, beyond putting them in the upstairs window to see what pops up. (In my case, not much.)

@PistonPin Oh also - There is a choice of radio modes and the common standard seems to be to use Long Fast. I believe that wasn't the default on mine when I configured them, and I had to change it. If you're not using the same mode as the other units in your area, you won't see each other.

@coreysnipes My node arrived this morning. I've immediately set it up and it actually seems to be working quite well. The farthest node I see so far, is 94km away (four hops, iirc). π

@PistonPin Nice! Is that just with the LoRa radio or are you using MQTT?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from coreysnipes@fosstodon.org
@coreysnipes So far, radio only. But I'd also like to experiment with MQTT.

@PistonPin Ah, that's much better luck than I've had around here. Great to hear.

@coreysnipes I was thinking about picking up a device or two, but this post was definitely a good perspective for me, before dropping like $200 on hardware. Thank you!

@metalplates You bet. I really like the idea of meshtastic and lora in the "alternate networks" sense but unless you have a specific use case in mind there's not much to do. At least in my area.
