Just finished migrating my @publii static HTML publishing workflow from the old windows laptop to the new linux laptop. It took a little fiddling but it's working well. The process is very easy with the built-in backup plugin.

Just did a quick scan of my local #cleveland area masto connections, and quite a few haven't posted since 2024. Many of those are active on Bluesky. Based on their posts and shares there, it looks like there's a pretty decent Cleveland local scene, at least for the material I sought on twitter (urbanism, community organizations, local politics, sports).
βοΈ Really feeling the tension between living one's principles on masto and connecting with local peers elsewhere.

Lightweight object detection from one of the primary #OpenDroneMap devs. Just "pip install" and you're up and running with some basic models. Or add your own onnx. Works on older hardware; no GPU required. @sarahdalgulls check it out https://community.opendronemap.org/t/geodeep-lightweight-ai-object-detection-library/23173

Background: I have two nodes, which can't see any other nodes besides each other. So, for some actual connections I connected one to an internet gateway (MQTT) so it is receiving messages on a local (Ohio) channel.
Meshtastic is an interesting technology for experimentation, but it helps to have a specific use case in mind. Most communication is basically "hello? is this thing on?"

My fedi home instance (Fosstodon) took a very measured and IMO sensible approach to whether to block or federate with Threads. https://hub.fosstodon.org/our-position-on-threads
In sum:
Fosstodon does not block Threads instance-wide, since all users can easily do this for themselves,
AND because the current observed behavior of threads users is very good (essentially zero abusive content from Threads).
AND they will continue to monitor and revisit the decision if future behavior warrants.

Overall I'm happy with the current state of things. I'm self-hosting things that are important to me, and getting a lot of value out of the services that are being handled by third parties. And I have a higher level of trust in the third parties I'm using.

With some planning and effort I was able to cancel all of these in 2024: 1) adobe, 2) microsoft, 3) github, 4) airdata
In 2023 I moved my dedicated hosting from Amazon EC2 to a small US hosting provider in the midwest.
In 2024 I spent a lot of time and expense moving my little platoon of shared hosting sites from Siteground to Hostinger. (I hit a usage cap and was annoyed.) In hindsight, I would not have done that. It was way more trouble and expense than it warranted.

Going through my credit card statements and cancelling some upcoming subscriptions that are of low/no value. Automated billing is great, but also has a way of hiding minor leaks. πΈ

I have been thinking about what I actually accomplished in my free time the last couple of weeks. As it turns out I have learned a lot about both #XMPP and #Meshtastic, and have refined a bunch of my thoughts about small/ethical tech. So that seems like a pretty good way to roll into a new year.
