I'm planning to get my amateur radio license soon. Who should I be following on Mastodon? I don't expect to ever have an antenna mast in my back yard, but I would like to be proficient, and, let's face it, it opens a whole new world of electronics devices that I will “need”.

@bitsplusatoms @geerlingguy Follow that #hamradio tag and follow anyone and everyone that interests you. The more the merrier; you'll get exposed to the most stuff.

You'll "need" a few devices...
But you'll WANT A LOT of 'm!
There is no antidote for #hamradio !

Plus one for following the tag. Also understand that “amateur radio” is really just code for “47292955 rabbit holes where you can choose your own adventure.”
RE: studying - don’t worry about “knowing” before testing. The initial license is mostly regulatory and safety, and is a license to learn.

@alatartheblue @bitsplusatoms @W6KME it is indeed a massive set of rabbit holes. I have spent far too much on SDR stuff and antennas lately heh.

@bitsplusatoms @geerlingguy Broken record here, but yes, those #hamradio and #amateurradio tags are going to be your new best friends! And welcome to the new worldwide club! You won't stop at just the Tech license, I can assure you...

@Plamobot @geerlingguy Thank you. Would you suggest trying to take Tech and General at the same time, or get through one and then the other?

@bitsplusatoms Not sure about others, but, when I first got my license, I knew HF was my interest, so I prepared for and took Tech and General at the same time. It has allowed me to get started on HF digital modes (my favorite type of operating) while studying for Extra.

@dustinroyer @bitsplusatoms here's another vote for just doing tech and general in one sitting - that's what I did, and I never regretted it.

@N3VEM @dustinroyer @bitsplusatoms I studied and received my Technician ticket alone (having failed the General immediately after passing). Days after my call sign arrived, I’m already studying for the General. My excitement to simply get a real call sign faster got ahead of me.
