The macOS app IINA (media player) and the Firefox plugin Open In IINA is a pretty good combo for watching YouTube without the utterly intolerable advertising, or paying the utterly intolerable company behind it all.

I want to add that IINA is open source, and in Homebrew. And it's a very polished app.
