Review: The Odyssey is a story about a homicidal maniac (Odysseus) who refuses to ask for directions. This tragic flaw, shared by many men, leads his crew to disaster. Some are eaten by monsters, some are eaten by their crew-mates, and some finally get fed up with this cruise from hell (literally at one point), and take a flight home.
When Odysseus returns home, he is shocked, SHOCKED, to discover that after a 20-year absence, his wife is entertaining the possibility of remarrying.

Some people during the last 2.5 k years understood differently: It is the story of a enterprising, intelligent and pious heroe, who is tried by various deities, not least by the charms of a half godess, Circe. He keeps loosing his crew members because of their frivolous acts, like stealing the sun god's cattle. So before reaching home he lost literally everything except his life. It finally is the godess Athene who restores him to his home and his still loving wife.

@Ogequ567 I don't disagree with you, actually. I was just having a bit of fun. On the other hand, he was critical in enabling the Greeks do a genocide at Troy. Just saying.

Also Odysseus was lucky in that he had great publicity with the latest technology - Homer perhaps was the first one to use letters for fiction, writing down epic "songs". It is always the winners who write history.
