Fun fact:

🕺The Village People did not originate the dance!

The audience at an American Bandstand taping on January 6, 1979 performed the moves during the song. Host Dick Clark asked: "Victor, think you can work this dance into your routine?"

They performed it again, this time using the audience's choreography.

Also:
