Applied for a job about 3 rungs lower on the food chain than I used to have, at my former employer.

Which will win: the fear that I'll bail as soon as I get a better job, or the greedy glee at getting me for cheap?

I figure any job is better than no job at this point, with the unemployment stipend set to end and savings looking a bit green around the gills. Plus, I'd actually really enjoy a 9-to-5 in the lab again. Let someone else worry about the corporate bullshit.
