@Geojoek ...how/why?!

@knizer
I ask myself that several times a day living in this thing.
My only guess is that the front door used to be in this corner, and that perhaps when the house was originally built the studs were resting on a door sill of some sort that was later removed? Who knows. There might be a hidden stud behind this.
(Bought from friends off-market a few years ago for a reasonable price, and still in better condition than anything remotely in my price range on the market.)

@Geojoek is foam holding up your house, Joe 😛?

Probably? This half, anyway. And the 2 inches of void space between the spray foam and the dry wall. (This is an incredibly poorly applied spray foam job.)

@Geojoek I know in my office, which I built in 2015, I used open cell in the walls and attic. It cures "pimply" like the left of your pic. Those "puff balls" don't seem even like the same stuff. But hey, you are much better off with it than with batting IMHO, though it can make repairs challenging.

We’ll see the other photos. They only did it about halfway up the wall, and applied it so thinly that it’s our value is not really competitive. I’m putting Rockwall in most of the wall. I’m also having to remove half of it to sister all of the studs that have rotted out from the moisture issues it has created. it was just really poorly done.

@Geojoek non-load bearing stud. That's an interesting choice. Up next? "Couldn't find Romex so used an old extension cord to wire up a socket."

I hope it isn't actually load bearing, but they are both part of the framing on load bearing walls... so they should be load bearing. One wall is warped near this corner and I'm hoping this isn't why.

@Geojoek
Ahhhh, the ol' levitating stud trick!
Judging from the rot in the lower portion of those studs, there was -some- type of previous sillplate that completely rotted out
Spray foam trapping in the additional moisture in there probably doesn't help
Your theory about a previous door and sill could make sense for one wall, but probably not both? And what is that black thing? Pipe or heavy electrical?

@NilaJones
The previous owners repaired a lot of moisture damage but never addressed the root cause (sill plates below grade), and did stuff like this that made it worse. A non-rotted sill plate is under that foam, and all the other studs in each wall are properly attached to it.
Wire is heavy electric, disconnected, presumably going to where an entry light used to be.
The drywall is coming off anyway to mitigate the poorly applied spray foam, so there will be more!

@Geojoek ACK. DIY repairs, minus the research. Been there.

Imbeciles, Joe. Imbeciles do that.

So since opening up the wall, I have discovered that this is actually a sister on a structurally sound existing stud that was attached as backing for drywall. At least, that’s the only logic I can figure out behind it.

Well, that's a heck of a lot better than a floating stud!
