I'm still pluggin' away. Trying to show up everyday even if I don't necessarily feel it. I'm hitting a bit of a plateau, but the only way through it is to keep at it.

At the risk of embarrassing myself, I present the entire page of yesterday's doodling. It did not start off strong, and I struggled to settle my mind from the usual worries and stress to find any direction. Finally some heckler in the back of my brain yelled out, "Skiing turtle!" And I went, "Skiing turtle?" And they just said "SKIING! TURTLE!" more emphatically. And I was all, "Hmm... Well... Maybe..." I dunno. I kinda liked the result.

While looking for a subject to draw, I came across a black-winged stilt. A bird with cartoonishly long legs. They're so unbelievably long that I realized after I had completed most of the sketch that I had made my bird's legs too short even though I was trying to be mindful of their length. 😆

I'm still showing up for my daily ritual of drawing (except for when I was working on the Sonic poster). Some days are better than others. I have a growing dissatisfaction coupled with an inkling of maybe where I'd like to take things.

I have a tendency to be attracted to drawing faces (as seen in the post above). So if I'm not actively working against it (or pursuing a specific goal), my brain drifts towards making a face. Normally they're exaggerated, comical faces (they're very easy I'm afraid). Sometimes I try to be more realistic. Sometimes I succeed. Sometimes I give up and draw a demon face.

I also tried my hand at studying some old portraits.

And I am forever drawing variations of alien/monster heads. Sorry not sorry.

I've also been sketching out ideas for pieces that I will likely never attempt, but it's fun to think about them. That one has mild backside nudity, so watch out!

In mid August I finished up my second sketchbook[1], and I needed to start another. I ended up taking an unintentional break from drawing when I got hung up trying to figure out a different approach to my drawing practice. I didn't want to start with a fresh sketchbook until I figured it out. I finally got over it the other day. My first drawing was depicting what I imagine Pac-Man looks like once you get enough resolution.

I'm working on a doodle, and there's an aspect of it I decided to troubleshoot off the page (instead of my usual practice of just doodling harder). So I went looking for some paper, but I didn't want loose leaf. After a brief search, I found a pile of my old sketchbooks. I'm pretty sure this is the last drawing I made prior to taking an unplanned five year art break. Huh...

I spent the past several doodling sessions on a drawing that has many problems, but I ended up liking it anyway. Plenty of room for improvement, so I'll just keep twirling, twirling, twirling towards mastery.

The seated figure was just me "discovering" the character as I went, so it looks rougher and doodlier. The flying friend was an idea I decided to work out off the page before drawing it. So it looks a little more refined, as I drew it more than once.

I came across a couple of more sketchbooks. In one, I found a practice run for a Chinese New Year's card I made for a friend in 2008. I've made a few different cards over the years. Some hand made for an individual, others printed for holidays. (I've always wanted to do a lino print run.)

2007 was the year of the pig, and 2008 was the year of the rat. With that info, I think you get the idea. My friend seemed to like the card, which was all that mattered.

In an attempt to get a sense of control about things before the week starts, I'm trying to make a dent in the disaster that is my office.

I started this little fellow during a playdoh session with the kiddo. I worked on it a couple of times after the initial session, and even cobbled together an armature stand. I had plans, but it's clear they're not happening. So sorry, incomplete little guy, you've got to go. But I'll record you here for posterity.

I'm still plugging away, although getting time to draw has been a struggle recently. I'm sharing two that, like many things in life, aren't the best but also not the worst.

The Santa wannabe was not planned. I started with what became the top of the bag, and the rest followed from that.

I included a bonus snail, because snail shells are fun to draw and look at.

My sketch habit has been rocky the past month or so. Maybe it's the holidays. Maybe it's because I took a detour working on a Christmas card. Whatever the cause, I've been really meh whenever I tried to pick up a pencil and paper, and my attempts at drawing have left me feeling pretty disheartened.

I realized I was probably approaching things wrong and decided to try to relax and just doodle whatever. No pressure. These little fun guys popped out.
